Hillcreek Pottery Is Open Each Operating Day.
Home of Silver Dollar City's doily pie plate, you'll be educated and entertained by demonstrations of wheel-thrown pottery. Well known for the large assortment of fully functional and decorative pottery items such as dinnerware, bake ware sets, wind chimes, flower pots and more, the shop has been selected as a bridal registry and a source for collectors around the world. In addition to the in-house produced product, there are offerings from local and national pottery studios.
2010 marks Silver Dollar City's 50th anniversary, and to celebrate the occasion our potters are creating a special collection of cobalt blue and white-clay kitchenware, in the country crockery tradition.
The Story of Hillcreek Pottery
Potters, by trade, joined the hundreds of frontiersman traveling to California in search of their fortune during the Great Gold Rush. They camped along the banks of the White River during their travels, and found that mud from the banks made very fine pots. They decided to settle here and searched until they found a spot, nestled in a hillside, which was an ideal location for a kiln to fire their pottery.
As the potters began selling their pots, some of the ladies from the area gathered to exchange recipes and uses for the pottery, and after a time, began to help the potters sell their wares.
Today, these ladies continue to share their recipes and decorating tips with travelers and pickup a few new stories from their guests as well. The potters sit and talk to folks while creating beautiful fountains, bowls, vases, and tableware.
