The General Store Is Open Each Operating Day.
As in any 19th century town, our General Store has been the hub of Main Street for many years. Stop by and mail a letter at the authentic, working Post Office. The General Store's 1880's environment features necessities for the young frontiersman as well as a variety of related gift items such as roosters, graniteware and bonnets. Select refreshments and snacks from the cooler, and choose from items made in Missouri in our "Best of Missouri Provisions" food section.
In celebration of Silver Dollar City's 50th anniversary, commemorative handcrafted baskets made with a blend of Ozarks maple, walnut, and white oak hardwoods will be available during the 2010 season.
The Story of the General Store
A wagon train was traveling on their way from Charleston to California in wagons loaded with provisions and thirteen mail order brides. They slightly overpacked...by two tons of flour, 750 pounds of sugar and enough salt to cure every porker in the country. Plus, need we remind you of the pleasantly plump mail order brides! On top of that, they picked up a young basket maker in Tennessee. The wagons just couldn't take it. After breaking down several times while crossing the Boston Mountains, Silver Dollar City was as far as they could get. All brides found love in the hills except for the Wagonmaster's daughter.
Well, the Wagonmaster and his wife set up the General Store and today the family runs the store, which sells all those pounds and pounds of provisions. Look out! We hear tell that he is also hunting a man for his little girl. He even opened the Silver Dollar City Post Office, so he could keep up on all of the news about who was coming and going in the city.
The basket maker took up residence in the store as well and makes the finest white oak baskets anyone has ever seen - that is when he isn't hiding from the Wagonmaster's daughter!
