Every new mining town with its promise of good wages and hope of striking a fortune attracts new immigrants, and Silver Dollar City is no exception. Mortimer Lucchi arrived here in 1882 with his family to stake a claim on the hillside below the Town Square. Mortimer began excavating under the present day ice cream parlor when he struck not silver, but a healthy spring of cold, pure water.
A good source of fresh water is an asset to any town and 'Mama' started using the cool interior of the mine to feed the hungry miners her special spaghetti and Italian meatballs, pizza by the slice, panini sandwiches, chicken alfredo and fresh salads. Jack the Butcher supplied the finest ground sausage and beef and Sullivan's Mill provided the best flour for Mama to make her famous pastas. Needless to say miners and townsfolk from far away came to eat Mama Lucchi's home style cooking. Mama even recruited family members who had settled in Tonitown, Arkansas, to help with her new enterprise.
