Joyce 'Cricket' Huth
Master Candle Maker

Joyce, and her candles, prove that good things do indeed come in small packages.

A Craftsman In The Making
Joyce ‘Cricket’ Huth is a native Missourian who has always enjoyed bringing her family to Silver Dollar City. Through the years, she was particularly interested in watching the demonstrating craftsmen create handmade works of art. After ‘retirement’, Huth moved to Ozark Mountain Country for good, where her bubbling personality and inviting enthusiasm fit right in.
The Silver Dollar City Years
Understanding visitors is one of Huth’s longtime skills. In fact, she was originally hired in Silver Dollar City’s marketing department where she spent time studying surveys and visitors’ requests. Then, in 1990, she hopped at the chance to be an apprentice at Carrie’s Candles where she learned the art of carving, and soon became immersed in her new profession.

Her savvy about staying ahead of trends and predicting what visitors will want guides her choices of the shop’s more than 50 fragrances. Every year, she attends conferences sponsored by the International Guild of Candle Artisans to learn new techniques and share ideas. "I go to workshops, try a lot of different things—we’re always trying something new," she said. And though she’s now a master craftsman, Huth believes she’s learned just as much about her craft from shop visitors. "They’re really an unending source of information," she said. "I see many of the same faces in here several times a year."

Interesting Extras
And about that unusual nickname? Credit a former boss, she said, who admired her energy and compared her to "Cricket" on the then-popular TV show "Hawaii Five-O." "Then when I started at the candle shop, there was another Joyce here, and it became so confusing I just told everyone to call me ‘Cricket,’ " she explained. "I’ve grown to like it. And it’s a name most people can’t say without smiling."
